'Turnback Tuesday' highlights Oct. 1955 flood

Turnback Tuesday remembers two significant things: Housatonic Lumber Co. 1907-2009 and the October Flood of 1955.
We all know about the August, 1955 Flood, but not much about the second flood that followed in October.
Many people and businesses in Derby were cleaning up after the August flood's devastation only to have to endure another flood just two months later. On Oct. 14-17, a torrential storm dumped another 12” to 14” of rain on an already saturated landscape.
The Housatonic Lumber Co., located at the connecting point of the Housatonic and Naugatuck Rivers, was once again under water.
This image, taken on Oct. 16, 1955 by Harold Yudkin, and many other images are currently on display at Derby Public Library until the end of September.

Thanks goes to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week.
