Turnback Tuesday is showcasing this leather bound ledger from the F. Hallock Co. (Franklin), a very successful and large hardware store in Derby.
This ledger is 16” x 11.5” x 2.5” in size. Records and running totals were kept of people in Derby who purchased from this store.
Robert S. Gardner, who was a successful jeweler in Derby, married Franklin’s daughter, Edith May. Later he went to work for the Hallock Co. and used this ledger.
Edwin Hallock was the younger brother of Franklin and his name appears on this page dated 1897. Edwin took over the business when Franklin passed away.
The book has 500 pages all written in cursive. Robert S. Gardner was a board member for the Derby Public Library from 1918 to 1941. It was a recent donation to the Library.
Thanks goes to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week!
