From Derby Public Library's Facebook page:
This week's "Turnback Tuesday" is a photo taken in 1908 of the Old Town Well once located at the foot of Academy Hill Road and Derby Avenue [in Derby].
A town meeting held in 1702 granted Francis French, Jr. "liberty to digge a well on ye highway provided he secure it against cattle coming to harm thereby and that ye town cartway be not prejudiced thereby."
It remained a landmark for centuries until double tracking of the trolley necessitated the well's covering around 1910.
Hmmm...is that house still standing?
