HARTFORD - State Rep. M. Linda Gentile, D-Ansonia/Derby, is pleased to report that firefighters, both current and former, could soon have workers’ compensation coverage for illnesses and diseases attributable to the performance of their duties.
“This important bill has come a long way thanks to the hard work of many,” Gentile said.
The bill passed by unanimous vote at 12:07 a.m. today and will now be taken up in the Senate.

The legislation presumes that firefighters are at risk for numerous types of cancers, diseases and illnesses.
It makes those affected eligible for workers' comp benefits unless evidence shows something else was the cause.
“It is reasonable and responsible legislation that will provide a much needed and deserved level of protection for those individuals who selflessly provide public safety and protection for all of us and our families," Gentile said. "It is simply the right thing to do."
