From the 'Turnback Tuesday' archives: Derby's first mayor

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features an image of Derby's first mayor, Thomas Jefferson O'Sullivan.

Although Derby was officially recognized by the state of Connecticut in 1675, it wasn't until after Ansonia's separate incorporation as a city in 1893 that Derby's current boundaries were set. And after which time Dr. O'Sullivan was elected mayor of the City of Derby.

Born in 1852 in Preston, O'Sullivan first attended medical school in Burlington, Vermont then eventually earned his medical degree in New York. After graduating in 1876, he practiced in Worcester, Mass. for two years before returning to Connecticut and setting up a new practice in Derby.

He remained in Derby until his death around 1900.

Stroke awareness talks slated at 3 senior centers, Derby Neck Library

 

Griffin Health and the Agency on Aging of South-Central Connecticut are hosting a series of stroke awareness talks and free blood pressure screenings for seniors throughout the Valley in October.

The events will feature a discussion of the different types of strokes, the signs and symptoms, and risk factors. 

Griffin Health caregivers will also be offering free blood pressure screenings and consultations.

The events are scheduled for Oct. 3 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Ansonia Senior Center; Oct. 7 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Seymour Senior Center; Oct. 23 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Shelton Senior Center, and Oct. 24 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Derby Neck Library.

These offerings are part of the AgeWell program which is co-sponsored by Griffin Health and the Agency on Aging of South-Central Connecticut to increase access to care and prevent disease among the Valley senior community through a series of health screenings and healthy living education sessions each month. 

Periodically, this program provides nutritiously balanced and delicious foods for attendees.

Registration is required to attend the AgeWell stroke awareness events.

A major disaster declaration has been approved in response to the August 18 extreme flooding in our area. 

Residents and business owners who sustained losses in the designated areas can begin applying for assistance by clicking the button below, by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362), or by using the FEMA app. 

Disaster Assistance Federal assistance could include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners. The state, FEMA and SBA are currently identifying locations in the impacted counties to open disaster recovery & business recovery centers that will provide in-person support to help affected individuals apply for assistance. SBA Opens Business Recovery Centers The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has opened Business Recovery Centers (BRC) in Oxford, at the Oxford Town Hall, and in Monroe, at the Monroe Police Department, to assist businesses with losses due to severe storm, flooding, landslides and mudslides. The disaster declaration covers Fairfield, Litchfield and New Haven counties which are eligible for both Physical and Economic Injury Disaster Loans from the SBA.  SBA’s Customer Service Representatives can assist business owners complete their disaster loan application, accept documents, and provide updates on an application’s status. Walk-ins are accepted, but you can schedule an in-person appointment at an SBA Business Recovery Center in advance.   Application Filing Deadlines: Physical Damage: November 19, 2024 Economic Injury: June 20, 2025 What Types of Disaster Loans are Available? Business Physical Disaster Loans – Loans to businesses to repair or replace disaster-damaged property owned by the business, including real estate, inventories, supplies, machinery and equipment. Businesses of any size are eligible. Private, non-profit organizations such as charities, churches, private universities, etc., are also eligible. Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) – Working capital loans to help small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture, and most private, non-profit organizations of all sizes meet their ordinary and necessary financial obligations that cannot be met as a direct result of the disaster. These loans are intended to assist through the disaster recovery period. Home Disaster Loans – Loans to homeowners or renters to repair or replace disaster-damaged real estate and personal property, including automobiles. What are the Credit Requirements? • Credit History – Applicants must have a credit history acceptable to SBA. • Repayment – Applicants must show the ability to repay all loans.
