Gardening program planned at Kellogg Center in Derby
DERBY - Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection invites you to plan your herb and tea garden with the help of Jim Calkins, Executive Chef/Owner of Seasonal Catering at 6:30 pm May 12 at the Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Ave.
Calkins is an experienced chef working with local flavors and foods to create seasonal offerings and will share his knowledge of flavor combinations and help you plan your herb and plant selections this spring to give you great flavor throughout summer and fall.
This is the first of a two-part series which will include a follow up this fall on harvesting and drying.
Seasonal Catering on Elizabeth Street is a gluten free, nut free café offering vegetarian and vegan selections. It is a proud partner with local Connecticut farms and businesses to source its products.
The café also works to utilize local grown products in their catering and café menu as well as offering them for sale through their gift store.
Please call for details or to register. This event is free, but donations are accepted. Light refreshments will be provided.

Derby Library to host Master's Table info session
DERBY - The Derby Public Library will host a Master’s Table Community Meals Information
Session at 6:30 p.m. June 1.
This nonprofit Valley organization provides a safe and uplifting environment for the hungry, providing healthy, nutritious meals to all in need.
Volunteer cooks plan and prepare the meals using donated food and funds. Come and learn how you can help combat
hunger in your community.

Kellogg Center in Derby hosting paper art exhibit
Meet the Artist reception planned Saturday
DERBY - The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection announces the newest art exhibit taking place at Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Ave.
Paper artist Ben Parker showcases two collections, “Etched in Stone” and “Breaking the Pattern” that represent a type of origami paper craft called tessellation folding, which are two dimensional tilings made from a single sheet of paper.
The exhibit will be at the Center from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. through Saturday (May 9), including a Meet the Artist Reception at 4 p.m. Saturday for visitors to learn more about the artist, his work, and methods of folding paper.
Parker will be available to answer questions on how the work is designed and produced by hand. He has been folding paper since 2007.
Working with a single sheet of paper and using precise gridlines he is able to create handmade intricate designs of clusters and twists forming beautiful geometric patterns. The work in tessellations is both mathematical and meditative.
This combination is the motivation of his work leading to self-actualization to better understand the world around him and what he is capable of creating.
Parker’s work has been on display in a variety of centers around Connecticut, United States and is in a collection of La Escuela Museo Origami de Zaragoza in Spain. He has lectured and hosted workshops as part of National Origami Conventions and a variety of Artist Collectives.
He works daily at his studio in Manchester pushing the boundaries of what can be done.
The Kellogg Environmental Center is a facility of the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection.
Participation in the Meet the Artist Event or to visit the exhibition is free and open to the public.
