Cupcake war slated in Branford to benefit BHcare

BRANFORD - A Shoreline Benefit for BHcare featuring Cupcake War 2017 will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m. May 11 at the Pine Orchard Yacht & Country Club.

The evening will feature a full menu, silent auction, music, an amazing view, wonderful company, and a delectable assortment of cupcakes from local bakeries.

Seven local bakeries are participating in the cupcake war. They are: Eat Your Art Out (North Haven), La Cuisine Café, Market & Catering (Branford), La Rosticceria (Guilford), Marjolaine Pastry Shop (New Haven), Milani Italian Bakery & Cafe (Northford), Parthenon Diner Restaurant (Branford) and Take the Cake (Guilford).

The committee, chaired by Charlotte Mattei, SVP, Webster Bank, and BHcare board member, is seeking event sponsors, ad sponsors and auction donations.  

Event sponsorships range from $250-$1,000 and ad book space is available for as little as $50.

Tickets are currently on sale for $50 each and are selling quickly.

Decreases in state and federal funding coupled with increases in demand for services make fundraising events such as this benefit critical to sustaining services for those at risk and in need.  

Each year BHcare provides domestic violence, mental health, and addiction services for more than 2,000 Shoreline residents.

Osborne Homestead in Derby to reopen for 34th season

DERBY - The Osborne Homestead Museum will reopen for its 34th season May 6.

Guided tours will introduce visitors to the extraordinary life of Frances Osborne Kellogg and to her wonderful collection of antiques and fine art in this charming Colonial Revival house.  

As the spring season unfolds, enjoy the flowering trees, aromatic shrubs, and splendid flowers of the Kellogg Estate.

  

The Osborne Homestead Museum will be open for guided tours on the following days:

Thursday and Fridays: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. 

Saturday: 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Sunday: noon-4 p.m. through October.

Frances Osborne Kellogg had a tradition of supporting the arts and promoting conservation. This tradition continues with special events in June:

June 10: Connecticut Open House Day 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Connecticut Office of Tourism is sponsoring the 12^th annual Connecticut Open House Day, a statewide event designed to showcase Connecticut’s history, art, and culture.  
The Osborne Homestead Museum is joining their effort by providing a special presentation on the Japanese art form ukiyo-e, a crafts workshop, and free tours of the museum featuring Japanese woodblock prints and Asian art.  

June 25: Connecticut’s Historic Gardens Day noon-4 p.m.

Connecticut’s Historic Gardens Day is a special state-wide celebration of Connecticut’s stunning historic gardens.  
The Osborne Homestead Museum is one of 15 members of the prestigious Connecticut’s Historic Gardens whose different garden styles are honored on this day.

Upcoming events this summer include a special architecture tour, a tea crafting workshop for children, a Victorian tea etiquette workshop for adults, and more.

Derby Public Library hosts teen activities

DERBY - The Derby Public Library hosts YA Wednesdays every month from 6-7:30 p.m. 
All young adults ages 12 to 17 are invited to join the fun each Wednesday in May as Nintendo Wii, a variety of board games, and Legos will be available.

Seymour to hold cleanup on Earth Day

SEYMOUR - The Board of Selectmen invites you to participate in a cleanup event to celebrate Earth Day!  

On April 22 from 9 a.m. to noon volunteers will gather at Sochrin’s pond on Moss Avenue.  

The event will focus on removing garbage from the trails in the woods next to the park.  

Participants will be treated to free pizza at the end of the event.
