From the 'Turnback Tuesday' archives: Farm couple in East Derby

This week's “Turnback Tuesday” photo is of Oliver B. Sherwood and his wife, Charlotte (Fowler) Sherwood.
Oliver was born in Greenfield Hill, Fairfield County, and moved to Derby with his father in 1817. Charlotte was born in Milford where the two met. They married on Sept. 3, 1836 and had four children together. Oliver was a farmer aka “seed grower” and distributed his produce all the way up to New York.
The photograph was apparently taken by one of Oliver’s relatives, Elizabeth Sherwood, in front of their home located on Derby Hill.
It was taken sometime during the late 1880s or early 1890s before Charlotte’s death in 1892. Sentinel Hill Road and Sodom Lane were both listed as cross streets, so the house was located somewhere in that area.
Oliver and Charlotte are buried in Oak Cliff Cemetery on Hawthorne Avenue in Derby.

Derby Public Library to host presentation on Old Woodbury Path

The Old Woodbury Path was once an ancient Native American path that originally connected what is now the Lower Naugatuck Valley with tribal communities closer to Long Island Sound.

That was before it was made wider by European settlers in Oxford and Seymour so that they could more easily bring farm products to market during the Colonial Period.
Ultimately, the path connected Woodbury and beyond with Derby landing, which was an important port for ships that carried produce to New York, Boston, Europe and the West Indies.
Learn more about this ancient highway, its effect on commerce, its eventual demise, and where original sections can still be found.
This event is Part of Derby's 350th Celebration.

Ansonia Police charge 2 men, juvenile in electric bike robbery

Sheldon Haley

Kylen Sanders

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Police Department Tuesday responded to a reported armed robbery in which a juvenile victim was robbed of his electric bike. The victim indicated that the suspect took the bike after displaying a firearm.

Responding officers observed another suspect operating the stolen bike shortly after the incident and found the bike abandoned on Sunset Drive where it was recovered, Lt. Patrick Lynch said in a release.

Additional officers and detective personnel were conducting surveillance and patrols in the area.  They were able to locate a vehicle that was suspected of containing one of the suspects.
A motor vehicle stop was conducted on the vehicle, and one of the suspects, a 17-year-old juvenile, was located in the vehicle and taken into custody.  Officers recovered a loaded firearm and narcotics from the 17-year old juvenile suspect.

The 17-year old suspect was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery 1st degree, carrying a pistol without a permit, larceny 2nd degree, interfering with a police officer and possession of a controlled substance (2 counts).
The juvenile was ordered detained and transported to the Juvenile Detention Center in Bridgeport.

The other suspect has been identified and an additional arrest is expected in the robbery investigation, Lynch said.

As a result of the motor vehicle stop where the robbery suspect was located, additional narcotics were located in the vehicle and the two other occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody on narcotics charges.
While in custody, one of the suspects attempted to conceal additional narcotics on his person and resisted being searched but those narcotics were recovered.

Sheldon Haley, 45, of Ansonia was charged with possession of a controlled substance. He was released after posting a $5,000 bond.

Kylen Sanders, 31, of West Haven was charged with possession of a controlled substance (2 counts), possession of narcotics with intent, tampering with evidence, and interfering with a police officer.
Sanders also refused to be processed/fingerprinted and was additionally charged with failure to be fingerprinted.
He was held on a $50,000 bond and arraigned today in Derby Superior Court today.

More information will be released as needed.
Lynch said the attached photo of Kylen Sanders is a photo from 2020 as he refused to be processed during last night's arrest.

Derby police arrest Wolcott man in connection with 2024 street takeover

Dominic Guerrera

DERBY – Police arrested a Wolcott man they said was part of an illegal street takeover on Pershing Drive.

Dominic Guerrera, 19, was arrested Aug. 23 and charged with disorderly conduct, reckless driving, and illegal racing, according to a Facebook post.

According to police, Derby officers were called to the scene of a street takeover on Pershing Drive near Division Street on Aug. 24, 2024. Police said that street takeover participants approached officers and taunted them, while racing on the street and driving recklessly.

During the incident, police said they identified a white Crown Victoria as one of the vehicles in the takeover. In a separate stop by Connecticut State Police that evening, Guerrera was allegedly identified as the Crown Victoria’s driver.

An arrest warrant was later issued for Guerrera and he was arrested on Aug. 23, police said.

Guerrera was released on a $40,000 bond. His next court date is Sept. 4 at Superior Court in Derby, according to the state judicial website.

Any information on illegal street takeovers can be reported to Derby police by calling 203 – 735-7811.

'Turnback Tuesday' features 1921 map of Ansonia

Turnback Tuesday is sharing an image of a 1921 map of Ansonia. Remembering the Flood of 1955, this map gives a better idea of what downtown Ansonia looked like before the flood. It is an aerial view of Ansonia looking west. Many of the buildings shown no longer exist. Some street names have changed.
Derby Public Library is looking for a map of Derby produced in 1920 to add to our collection. The map of Ansonia is on loan to the library through the end of September.
