James Beardsley Wheeler of Thompson Street in Shelton was a lifelong nonconformist.
During the Civil War, when he was in his 20s, he was a conscientious objector. He had his own printing press, which he used to publish his own tracts, book and the Funny Graphics, an odd collection of 19th century philosophy.
