'Turnback Tuesday' features tradition of fun in the snow

Turnback Tuesday remembers the great tradition of snowball fights and making snowmen.

As long as there have been humans, there have been snowmen and snowball fights. Trying to track down when this tradition began is virtually impossible.

Think of snow as a free art supply that fell from the sky. There is no wrong or right way to build a snowman. It is wherever your imagination takes you.

The world’s largest snowman is, in fact, a snow woman. Made in 2008 in Bethel, Maine, Olympia was 122’ 1” tall and could be seen for four miles. Her eyelashes were skis and her smile was made of red tires.

Tidbit: Olympia was only 30” shorter than the Statue of Liberty.

Thanks goes to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting history each week.
