While the original Derby Commons was actually located in East Derby between Academy Hill Rd. and Clark Ave., the Derby Green as we know it today - located between Minerva and Elizabeth Streets - was part of the planned downtown for “Birmingham”, orchestrated in 1836 by businessmen Sheldon Smith and Anson G. Phelps (of “Ansonia” namesake fame.) In fact, the Derby Green is referred to as the “Birmingham Green Historic District” on the National Register of Historic Places.
Note that this image reflects the Green prior to the year 1999, when it underwent significant improvements including the addition of new lighting, new benches, new stonework around the central plaza and in front of the gazebo as well as renovation of the gazebo itself.
The last two upgrades were done to greatly enhance public events such as Derby’s Summer Concerts on the Green series.

DizzyFish is led by singer and guitarist, Eric Herbst, a powerful live performer who has shared the stage with ZZ Top, Steve Miller, and George Thorogood, and punctuated by world-class backup singers, Angela Clemmons, Sharon Jerry-Collins and Emily Bindiger. The Uptown Horns are a legendary New York City horn section, that toured with the Rolling Stones and played on hit records like James Brown's “Living in America.”
There will also be live and silent auctions for guests to bid on exciting items, fabulous experiences, and one-of-a-kind memorabilia, including seaside getaways and experiences in Rhode Island and Maine, NY Yankee tickets, designer handbags such as Dooney & Bourke, and spa and winery experiences.
Black tie dress is suggested, and ocean-inspired wear is encouraged.
Individual tickets are $225 and a table of 10 is $2,250. Sponsorship opportunities are available. Haynes Group is the event’s Diamond Reef Presenting Sponsor.
Proceeds will support Griffin Health’s mission to provide critical connections between patients and social services, coordinate outpatient care with compassionate outreach and expert navigation, and empower individuals with disease management education and support.

DERBY - Derby Public Library will host a Sweater Weather Book Swap and Bake Sale Jan. 10 to benefit Friends of Derby Public Library.
It will take place from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. We want to thank all those who have already dropped off books for the upcoming book sale.
Next book drop off will be tomorrow, Oct. 18 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
