Griffin community thanked for support of gloves, mittens drive for children

Keeping Little Hands Warm this Winter
A warm and cozy thank you to all the Griffin Health caregivers and members of our community for their support of this year's Griffin Health Community Outreach and SafeKids Greater Naugatuck Valley Gloves & Mittens Drive.
More than 200 pairs of gloves and mittens were collected at Griffin Hospital in December.
They were distributed throughout the Valley this month, including at the TEAM Inc. HeadStart program where children used their new gloves to play Winter Safety BINGO recently.

From the 'Turnback Tuesday' archives: 1890 wedding photo

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features a photo of Edith and Robert Gardner's wedding.
The wedding took place in Robert's home at 22 Derby Ave. on May 29, 1890. Robert Gardner, born in 1867, was a jeweler and a member of the Derby-Shelton Board of Trade. He gave up his business when he became GM of F. Hallock Co. in 1890.
That same year, he married Edith Hallock, daughter of the deceased Franklin Hallock. Robert continued as GM for the Hallock Company until the death of its president in 1932, at which time, Gardner took over as President. Robert was also very active in the community. He served as Deacon and Treasurer for the Second Congregational Church and was also on the Board of Directors of the Derby Public Library in the 1920s.
A portrait of Mr. Gardner hangs in the Library’s Local History Room.

Authors to speak, sign books Saturday at Derby Public Library

From the 'Turnback Tuesday' archives: Derby High School yearbook

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features the Derby High School yearbook, “Lookout.”

The logo is of a clipper ship like the ones formerly built in Derby. On the ship, the "lookout" was another name for the "crow’s nest." The Derby Public Library has copies of the Lookout yearbooks going back to 1901. These Lookout books started out as publications from the high school students themselves including various school activities and the like. The first Lookout that had photos of students was in 1935.

The Library would also like to request your help to complete our Lookout collection. Missing years are 1938, 1939, 1940, 1999, and 2006.

Note: All book donations are accepted at the Library’s discretion. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Derby Neck Library to present online author talks in February

In the depths of winter, books can bring us together, and this February’s Online Author Talks are giving us [at Derby Neck Library] a lot to talk about!

Smithsonian curator Sabrina Sholts starts our month as she talks about how the very fact of being human increases our pandemic risks—and gives us the power to save ourselves.
Waubgeshig Rice is joining us to chat about his newest book Moon of the Turning Leaves, the hotly anticipated sequel to the bestselling novel Moon of the Crusted Snow, a brooding story of survival, resilience, Indigenous identity, and rebirth.
And to complete our month, journalist and author Lee Hawkins will talk to us about examining his family’s legacy of post-enslavement trauma and resilience in his riveting memoir, I Am Nobody’s Slave.

Whether you join us for the live-stream or go back to watch the recording, you can submit questions for our presenters when you register ahead of time for the talks!
All registered participants will receive a link to the recording through their email.
