Griffin Hospital in Derby offers free weight-loss seminars in June

Griffin Bariatrics will offer free virtual presentations on its weight-loss services throughout June.

Led by Griffin Hospital Director of Bariatrics Dr. Abe Fridman, these seminars will explain how bariatric surgery can help patients lose significant amounts of weight, enhance their health, and provide long-term well-being. Additionally, techniques, support programs, pre- and post-operative expectations, and insurance questions are also discussed.

Upcoming seminars will be held on June 17 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and June 23 from 12-1 p.m.

Griffin Hospital established its comprehensive weight loss surgery program, Griffin Bariatrics, to provide a medical solution for patients with more substantial weight loss needs. The long-term success enjoyed by Griffin Bariatrics patients is a result of excellent medical care, including the latest minimally invasive surgical procedures, combined with access to a full range of multidisciplinary services that have been assembled to support them before, during, and after their surgery.

To register, contact Bariatric Care Specialist Kimberly Fisher at kfisher@griffinhealth.org or 203-732-7108. For more information about Griffin Bariatrics, visit griffinhospitalbariatrics.com.

From the 'Turnback Tuesday' archives: community of Burtville

DERBY - This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features a photo taken in the neighborhood of Burtville off Route 34 East before you get to Mt. St. Peter’s Cemetery.

This area once had its own church (shown.) The community takes its name from David Burt, who owned the land where the village now stands.

Considered quite a “character” in those days, Burt was brother-in-law to Rev. Stephen Jewett, rector of St. James Episcopal Church. In 1877, Mrs. D.M. Church organized a Sunday school class which grew into a mission, for which George Waterman donated a suite of rooms in the Reagan house that December.

Dr. B.F. Leach succeeded Mrs. Church as head of the mission, and Mrs. Martha Ticknor, adopted daughter and heir of the Burts, donated a site for the chapel adjoining the Burt home. The work was completed on July 6, 1879 at a cost of $500.

Charles H. French succeeded Dr. Leach as superintendent in 1883. Mrs. Charles French was organist, and Lorenzo D. Rockwell, sexton. There were 70 scholars registered at that time, representing the Baptist, Methodist, Congregational, and Episcopal denominations.

📅 WHEN: Thursday-Saturday, June 25-27.
📍 WHERE: Beacon Hose Co. No. 1 (35 North Main Street, Beacon Falls).

Here's what we've got on tap:
💰 $10,000 RAFFLE: It's back! The grand prize is $10,000, followed by 29 more cash prizes that bring the prize pool to $19,000. Tickets cost $20 and are currently on sale through the carnival. And finally, here's our schedule of events -- look for us to be adding a few things soon:

The support of Beacon Falls residents and all friends of Beacon Hose is always loyal and always appreciated.
We're also seeking donations from local residents and sponsorships from local businesses to help offset the substantial costs of the running the event.
Any donation or sponsorship helps, so we appreciate anything you can do. Thanks to our new title sponsor, the Beacon Pizza Bar!
