'Turnback Tuesday' features Birmingham Iron Foundry in Derby
Turnback Tuesday visits the Birmingham Iron Foundry of Derby, which was started as a small shop in 1836 by twin brothers Sylvester and Sullivan M. Colburn.
By 1838, their brother, Dr. J. M. Colburn, became associated followed by Sheldon Bassett. The Coburns sold the business in 1850, with Bassett becoming president until 1865.
This photo shows the Foundry's main plant at Derby Depot with access to the train and canal. It produced all kinds of iron and brass castings. By 1896, Birmingham Iron Foundry employed 200 people.
Thanks go to the Derby Public Library's staff for sharing interesting local history each week.
