Center for Disability Rights in West Haven to hold Wheel-A-Thon

WEST HAVEN - The Wheel-A-Thon is a fundraising and community awareness campaign to benefit the youth programs and activities of the CDR and its partners.

The 2018 Wheel-A-Thon will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. July 24 at Savin Rock Conference Center, 5 Rock St.

Registration and pizza will be from 6 to 6:45 p.m.

The ceremony starts at 6:45 p.m. and ends around 7 p.m. when the walk begins.
Awards to walkers will be distributed around 7:30 p.m. There will be live entertainment throughout.

Wheel-A-Thon participants can walk, roll in a wheelchair, or ride a bicycle along a one-mile route.

You can register and participate as an individual or you can form a team with your family, friends and co-workers.

The money raised during the 2017 Wheel-A-Thon provided Summer Empowerment Camp opportunities to nine high school juniors and seniors and provided five Wheel-A-Thon Scholarships.

Individuals who are not part of a team but who raise at least $25 for young people with disabilities can participate in the CDR Wheel-A-Thon as individuals.

Dragonfly Dash to benefit fund in memory of Ansonia child

ANSONIA - A 5K race or two-mile walk on the Hilltop to benefit the Leah Fund will step off at 6 p.m. June 1 from John C. Mead School, 75 Ford St.

Leah Rondon, 6, was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident in August, 2015. She was about to enter first grade at Mead School.

Recuperation journey: It's that cat again

Just noticed three hours after I published a blog post this morning there were typos that magically got into the text.
I realized since they were created with the letters 'a' and 'q' located on the left-hand side of the keyboard that Linus had been sitting right there before I saved the post.

He ruins everything! Well not everything, but he does get into mischief around here from time to time.

Yale students help organize BHCare Clothing Bank in Branford

Five students from Yale School of Management recently lent a helping hand to BHcare’s Clothing Bank in Branford.
The school celebrates Volunteer Week each year by helping out in the community.

The students spent the day cleaning and organizing the store.

Joan McFarlane, coordinator of the Clothing Bank appreciates the great work done by the School of Management Team.
“The young adults that volunteered today at the BHcare Clothing Bank were beyond our expectations,” McFarlane stated. “They were personable, organized, and worked without any direction.
"Their intelligence was evident in the way in which they took charge, their organizational skills and their cooperation amongst each other.”

For more than 35 years, BHcare has been providing hope and help for individuals, families and children affected by mental illness, domestic violence, and substance abuse. The BHcare Clothing Bank is an outreach program of BHcare that provides clothing to those in need. Thanks our generous donors, the Clothing Bank supplies clothing, shoes, accessories, baby gear, linens and personal care items for more than 3,000 individuals and families each year.

The Clothing Bank is located in the Patricia C. Andriole Volunteer Service Center at 30 Harrison Ave., Branford.
Hours are Monday-Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Griffin Hospital in Derby to host talk on preventing Lyme, skin cancer

Griffin Hospital and The Valley Senior Services Council will host a free talk on summer safety for those caring for seniors.

DERBY - Griffin Hospital and The Valley Senior Services Council invite caregivers – especially those caring for seniors - to talks on summer safety and caregiver resources.

The talks are part of a four-part series to help provide education, information, and support.

On May 17, representatives from Voices Against Lyme Disease and health experts from Griffin will present “Summer Safety - Lyme Disease and Skin Cancer,” with information on how to help prevent and treat these diseases.

The series wraps up June 7 with “Caring for the Caregiver,” which will provide tips on how caregivers can take care of themselves so they can better care for others.

Both presentations will start at 5:15 p.m. at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St.
There will be a free light meal provided by Valley United Way and Griffin Hospital Lifeline at 4:30 p.m. before each talk.
