Wine tasting in Seymour to benefit Treasured Time

Griffin Hospital in Derby to host smoking cessation talk

DERBY -With The Great American Smokeout weeks away, Griffin Hospital is helping those looking to quit smoking find support and learn about lifesaving screenings.

Griffin will host a free talk entitled “Lung Cancer: Know Your Risks, Know Your Options” at 6 p.m. Nov. 16 in the hospital’s Dining Room, 130 Division St.

Presented by Thoracic/Vascular Surgeon Richard P. Salzano, MD, Pulmonary Specialist K. Marya Chaisson, MD, and Smoking Cessation Coaches Carrie O’Malley, RN, and Eunice Lisk, MS, the talk will discuss the causes of lung cancer, its warning signs, the hospital’s free smoking cessation program, and lung cancer screening options.

Attendees will be able to take a free evaluation to see if they are at high risk for lung cancer, and may be eligible for a low-dose CT lung cancer screening that is covered by Medicaid, Medicare and most health insurance.

The American Cancer Society is encouraging smokers this month to use Nov. 19, the date of The Great American Smokeout, as a day to make a plan to quit smoking. By quitting — even for one day — smokers will be taking an important step that can lead to reducing cancer risk.
“That’s It Learn to Quit” is a free smoking cessation program offered by Griffin Hospital. The goal of the program is to help you learn how to quit. There are different methods of quitting and managing nicotine withdrawal. If one method didn’t work in the past there are others to try.
For more information or to sign-up for That’s It - Learn to Quit, call 203-732-1476.
In addition to helping people quit smoking, Griffin’s Low-Dose CT Lung Cancer Screening Program increases a person’s chances of surviving lung cancer. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that patients diagnosed with lung cancer in the earliest stage have an 88 percent chance of living 10 years or longer. Unfortunately, lung cancer has little or no symptoms in the early stages, so more than 85 percent of men and women are diagnosed in late stages when there is very little chance for a cure. Research suggests that increased screening of high-risk individuals could prevent up to 12,000 lung cancer deaths per year.

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 221,200 new cases of lung cancer are expected in 2015. With an estimated 158,040 deaths this year, lung cancer accounts for more deaths than any other cancer in both men and women. Cigarette smoking is by far the most important risk factor for lung cancer, a risk that increases with both quantity and duration of smoking. In addition, tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the country.

This talk is part of Griffin Hospital's Healthy U “Tuesday Talks,” a series of free wellness talks featuring Griffin Hospital medical experts and community partners providing trusted health information and answers to questions on a wide range of topics.

DERBY - The Board of Education will be recognized later this month for its exemplary leadership.

The award is from the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education, or CABE.

CABE’s Board Recognition Awards are designed to recognize boards which provide effective leadership to their districts through the use of good practices.

The program acknowledges the importance of school board members and superintendents working together as effective teams. It continues an important trend among school board associations across the country.
CABE has now established a second level of awards, the Board of Distinction Award, to recognize those boards which are truly exemplary.

In addition to fulfilling 22 of the 34 requirements of the Level One Board Leadership Award, the Level Two Board of Distinction Award includes 19 items.

The boards need to fulfill 12 of these with at least two completed in each of the following areas: board leadership/student achievement, board member professional development, policy, community relations, and related organizational leadership.

Superintendent of Schools Matthew Conway said, “This is the third year in a row that the Derby Board of Education has been recognized, but it is the first time they are receiving the top award. The recognition speaks to their level of commitment to this district and drive to achieve even higher goals.”

Board Chairman Kenneth Marcucio commented, “To be honored as a Board of Distinction in our state is a great honor for me, the members of our Board of Education, Dr. Matt Conway, the Derby School System and the city as a whole. It has been our objective to do whatever is necessary to make our school system the best it could possibly be for our students, given the tough times in today’s society. We have a great leader in Dr. Matt Conway who has helped us to do this during his short tenure in Derby.

"I am sure with his continued leadership we will continue to improve and have one of the best school systems in the state," Marcucio said. "Our students will continue to benefit from the hard work of our board members, Dr. Conway, administrators, teachers and all the other employees who work so hard in the background. Thank you toCABE for bestowing this honor on our small city.”

In addition to the CABE Level Two, Board of Distinction Award, the District has also received individual recognition awards in the areas of Newsletters, District Budget, Parent/Student Handbook and our computer generated project for our State of the District Address.

Robert Rader, Executive Director of CABE stated, “We are thrilled that the Derby Board of Education has joined other boards from around the state in receiving a CABE Board of Distinction Award. For a Board, leadership means carrying out its roles and responsibilities consistently, thoughtfully, in line with best practices and with the highest ethical standards.

The award will be presented Nov. 20 to the board and Conway at the CABE/CAPSS Annual Convention.
