Sharing historic photo from 19th century Derby

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features a photo of the original Derby Bank. 
Although Derby "Savings" Bank is more well known, it was not the first bank in Derby. The original bank - known simply as "Derby Bank" - opened in 1809, fittingly on Bank Street, facing Jennings Lane. (Note: Derby Savings Bank didn't open until 1846.) 

Derby Bank was initially established in order to manage the profits brought in by the Derby Fishing Co. In fact, the two institutions were so closely linked that when the fishing company ultimately failed in 1815, Derby Bank closed down as well. 
The Bank did reopen briefly in 1824, but dissolved the following year.

Gentile welcomes Internet access grant for Derby Public Library

HARTFORD - State Rep. Linda M. Gentile (D-Ansonia/Derby) is pleased to announce receipt of a grant from the State Library Board. 

The Derby Public Library will use the $16,360 grant to connect to the Connecticut Education Network by high-speed fiber. 

CEN provides reliable, high-speed access, data transport, and value added services to its members, including network security, applications, and numerous professional development options.

"This grant to Derby Public Library is one of the very first public library grants appropriated in the state,” Gentile said.
“I am glad the State Library Board gave us priority. Many families and seniors in Derby and surrounding communities cannot afford home computers. This grant will offer those individuals free Internet access – allowing them to cross the digital divide. The funds will cover installation of the fiber optic connection. 

"Libraries have always been, and will continue to be, a great resource for our residents."

Established in 2000, CEN helps deliver on the promise of equality in education by providing access to technology that schools and libraries would not be able to afford without assistance.

New Haven Symphony Orchestra to perform Broadway tunes at Shelton High

SHELTON - Pops conductor Chelsea Tipton and the New Haven Symphony Orchestra will present "Music of the Night" from 3-5 p.m. Nov. 6 at Shelton High School, 120 Meadow St. 

The performance of show-stopping tunes from The Great White Way will feature dynamic Broadway vocalist Connor Bogart.

Ticket prices range from $35 to $49; college students, $10; kids 7-17 admitted free with the purchase of an adult ticket.
