Griffin Hospital in Derby to host free talk on Medicare

DERBY - The Community Health Resource Center at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St., will host a free presentation on Medicare and related health care decisions from 9:30-11 a.m. Sept. 20.

Joe Deegan, a counselor for Connecticut’s programs for Health insurance, Outreach, Information and Eligibility Screening (CHOICES), will host “Medicare CHOICES,” a presentation to help older adults and those eligible for Medicare and their caregivers make informed health insurance decisions and to help prevent, detect and report healthcare fraud and abuse. 

There will be information on Medicare, Medigap, Medicare Managed Care, Medicaid, Long Term Care Insurance and other related state and federal programs.

This program is part of a series of free, educational forums hosted by the Community Health Resource Center to help improve the health of the community.

The Community Health Resource Center at Griffin Hospital is a traditional library that provides an array of medical and health information, including a large collection of easy to read health and lifestyle related materials. Derby Public Library to host Teen Maker Space session

DERBY -The Derby Public Library invites all young adults ages 12 to 17 to Teen Maker Space’s Build a Better World, Sept. 28, from 3-4:30 p.m. 

Available resources include 3D design programs, 3D printer, 3D doodle pens, Legos, and more! 

Light refreshments will be provided. Registration is requested.

Local author to read book at Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby

DERBY - Join photographer and author Tammy DiCenso at Kellogg Environmental Center at 10 a.m. Sept. 16 for a book reading and signing.  

Her book, Do You Want to Take a Selfie? features photographs of wildlife taken locally by DiCenso.  

Children and adults alike will enjoy this tale of a gosling, in search of  assistance in taking a selfie from the variety of animals living in and around wetlands.   

Displayed at the Kellogg Environmental Center through the month of September is “Found in My Hometown,” a show highlighting landscapes and wildlife captured on film by Tammy DiCenso along the riverwalk in Derby. 

A Derby resident, DiCenso found her passion for photography by looking at life through a lens. Her photos capture the beauty of nature that is right outside our doors and often missed if one does not take the time to look.  

Her first book, Do You Want to Take a Selfie?, grew out of her photography and this fall her second story, Whatcha Looking At? will be available.

Participants will have time to enjoy the photography, meet the artist, purchase a book, have it signed, take a walk, and share a selfie. Refreshments will be served after the reading.

The program is free; registration is requested.  

Kellogg Environmental Center, a facility of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, is at 500 Hawthorne Ave.

Seymour United Methodist Church to hold vendor fair Saturday

Women in Networking to host '80s Night at Strand Theater in Seymour

SEYMOUR - Don’t miss Retro ‘80s Night: the Ultimate Networking Night Out and benefit for Women in Networking. 

WIN is affiliated with the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce.   

Women and men 21 and older are invited to some fall fun Sept. 28 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. at the Strand Theater, 165 Main St.

Themed attire is encouraged but optional.

Net proceeds will support the WIN Entrepreneurial Grant Program for women-owned business in Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton.

The event kicks off with Happy Hour from 5:30-7 p.m. that features appetizers and a signature drink coupon, cash bar, '80s musical performance by Sketchy@Best, and a sampling with Tea with Tracy.  

There will be a showing of the '80s movie “Working Girl” at 7:30 p.m.

Advance entry is $40 per person, $50 at the door.

WIN was formed in 2002 by a group of businesswomen to exchange information unique to women in business.

WIN developed an entrepreneurial grant program for Women in Business. 

WIN hosts an annual fundraiser to support this grant and their fund with the Valley Community Foundation.
