'Turnback Tuesday' features stately Sterling Opera House in Derby

Turnback Tuesday looks at the first building in Connecticut to be listed on the National Registry of Historic Places: the Sterling Opera House in Derby, a magnificent building with a big story to tell.
Opening in 1889, in its day the Sterling hosted many talented performers, entertainers and a national hero.
It was used for meetings, graduation ceremonies, and plays. Sadly this iconic building stopped its performances in 1933. Scheduled performances appeared with the last being Nov. 30 and Dec.1,1945 with the “Ye Old Time Minstrel” hosted by the Lafayette Men’s and Women’s Club to honor WWII soldiers returning home.
The Opera House was opened for a special performance by Harry Braun the violinist in 1966. The Save Our Sterling nonprofit organization had a fundraising event with Gary Harger singing Ave Maria on Sept. 24, 1997.
When the cupolas were being installed on Feb. 11, 2011, Fran Scarpa did an impromptu song on stage to demonstrate the incredible acoustics.

Most recently, Harry Connick Jr. recorded his rendition of “Amazing Grace” on Feb.1, 2021.

This image is a thank you letter sent to Mayor Richard Dziekan, a recent donation to the Library historical collection.
Thank you to Joe DiRienzo and Jack Walsh for their assistance with this Turnback.

'Turnback Tuesday' from this date in 2017 features downtown Derby shop

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features an old advertisement clipping for George C. Allis' book and jewelry shop.

Allis started the business when he was only 15 years old. It was originally established in 1852 in a small room on "lower Main Street" in Derby, but in 1857, one Edward Lewis graciously built Allis a small store at 171 Main St.

In 1859, Allis began a circulating library within his shop and offered ~4,000 volumes. He acquired ownership of the building from Lewis in 1866 and managed his shop for over 70 years.

The store closed between 1924-25, and Allis died on Dec. 28, 1927, at the age of 92.

'Turnback Tuesday' features history of milk bottle caps

Turnback Tuesday explores the world of Milk Caps. The first patented milk bottle was in 1878. It was a glass jar with a tin lid.

In 1889, a seated cap bottle was patented. Called the “Common Sense Milk Bottle,” it had a ledge built inside the mouth which held a fiber disc used for closure. This fiber disc was created in 1892. These early discs needed a metal pick to remove them from the bottle.

In 1908, H. Bradley of Kings County, N.Y., designed the two layer cap with a flexible thumb tab from the top layer to make removal less difficult.

These caps were used to seal the glass bottle to ensure freshness of the milk. The caps were also a form of advertising with varied colors and designs. Children made games and played with these caps.

Milk caps are still collected and sought after today. Many of the dairies are not in existence anymore, so these caps are a glimpse into our past.
