Derby Neck Library readies annual backyard bird count participation

DERBY - The Great Backyard Bird Count is a yearly event hosted by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the Audubon Society, and Birds Canada that helps create a snapshot of global bird populations.
Now in its 25th year, the bird count has been a valuable source of data from "citizen scientists"--aka, everyday people like you!
The Derby Neck Library is inviting patrons of all ages to help us take part in this global effort.
All you have to do is count how many birds you see around the library or your yard, what kind they are, and report them to us! We'll send your findings to the Bird Count and keep a running tally on the circulation desk display of the birds we’ve counted together. You can count from inside or outside, but you should count for at least 15 minutes at a time.
At the library, we will have bird feeders set up in the garden and on the north-facing window of the children's room. We will also have checklists, guides, and other resources available for you at the front desk--including a pair of binoculars!
Now for the best part--we'll be having a KICK OFF PARTY between 5:30-7:30 p.m. February 17 to answer any questions and help get everyone started!
Refreshments will be provided, and registration is required for this event so we can plan accordingly.

Local lawmakers to host blood drive at Seymour Land Trust Hall

State Rep. Nicole Klarides-Ditria, state Senate Republican Leader Kevin Kelly, and state Sen. Eric Berthel, are asking the community to join them Feb. 17 during an American Red Cross Blood Drive at the Seymour Land Trust Hall.

“The Red Cross needs your help and they’re making it even easier for all of us by once again bringing this important mobile blood drive to the Land Trust Hall in Seymour,” Klarides-Ditria said. “Every donation helps save lives and I hope you’ll join me and my legislative colleagues by also donating on Thursday.”

“The Red Cross is experiencing its worst blood shortage in over a decade. Low blood supplies could mean deferred surgeries that jeopardize people’s health. Supporting those in medical need by donating blood can be a lifesaving act of kindness. Please consider donating if you can,” Kelly said.

“We all have the opportunity to lend a hand to those in need. The Red Cross will be right in our backyard to accept blood donations that can save someone’s life and I hope that you’ll support this important cause,” Berthel said.

According to the Red Cross, the entire process takes about one hour. The donation itself is only about 8-10 minutes on average.

Restrictions due to weight, health, or travel may apply and donors are urged to check their eligibility beforehand by going to https://www.redcross.org/give-blood.html or by contacting a local chapter.

***Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at the drive. You can make an appointment by visiting https://www.redcrossblood.org/ and using the sponsor code “Seymour.” Donors can also download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information.

This event is free and open to the public. For information about blood donation or other ways to help, please go to https://www.redcrossblood.org/

Sincerely,
