'Turnback Tuesday' highlights bridge over Housatonic River

Turnback Tuesday looks at the Housatonic River.

This photo is looking east down the 148-mile long river. The Derby-Shelton Bridge is in the background.

The original bridge linking the two towns together was built in 1839. The covered bridge seen in this photo was replaced in 1891.

The Ansonia, Derby, and Shelton part of the river is tidal. It is said that there is good fishing where the tidal waters meet the flow of the dam.

Thanks as always to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history.

Bishop Wicke Health and Rehab in Shelton recognized as Best Nursing Home

SHELTON - United Methodist Homes of Shelton is proud to share that Bishop Wicke Health and Rehabilitation Center is among the 13 percent of U.S. skilled nursing facilities that have been recognized as a Best Nursing Home for 2021-22 by U.S. News & World Report.

The skilled care community earned Best Nursing Homes status by achieving a rating of “High Performing,” the highest possible rating, for both Short Term Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care.

The five-star rated facility also received its second consecutive deficiency-free annual survey this fall, which is a significant accomplishment.

The nursing home inspection is a rigorous review process required for all nursing homes participating in Medicare and Medicaid and is regulated by State (Department of Health) and Federal authorities (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)). On average, skilled nursing facilities in CT receive 7 deficiencies per survey each year. Homes must be in substantial compliance with Medicare and Medicaid requirements, as well as state law.

United Methodist Homes President and CEO David Lawlor said, “We are extremely proud of our team at Bishop Wicke for upholding the highest standard of care through the most difficult times.  The extraordinary dedication and compassion of fantastic staff coupled with a 147-year organizational mission of service, and not profits, is a powerful combination!”

U.S. News gives the designation of Best Nursing Home only to those homes that satisfy U.S. News’s assessment of the appropriate use of key services and consistent performance in quality measures. The ratings include data on staffing, success in preventing ER visits and pneumonia vaccination rates, among other metrics. Out of 13,175 nursing homes that received a Long-Term Care Rating, 1,063 were designated as High-Performing.

The Short-Term Care Rating incorporates measures of quality including consistency of registered nurse staffing, use of antipsychotic drugs and success in preventing falls.

For 2021-22, 13,500 facilities received a Short-Term Rating, while only 1,651 homes earned a High-Performing Rating.

This year's methodology includes an emphasis on homes meeting certain standards of patient safety, which could limit a home’s ability to achieve a ‘High-Performing’ rating. These standards include a minimum threshold for the staff

COVID-19 vaccination rate, among other criteria. Homes that have below a 75% COVID-19 staff vaccination rate are not considered a leading facility.

A significant percentage of Short-Term Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care programs that would otherwise have qualified as 'High-Performing' were downgraded at the time of publication.

George Bailey has spent his entire life giving of himself to the people of Bedford Falls.
He has always longed to travel but never had the opportunity in order to prevent rich skinflint Mr. Potter from taking over the entire town. All that prevents him from doing so is George's modest building and loan company, which was founded by his generous father.
But on Christmas Eve, George's Uncle Billy loses the business's $8,000 while intending to deposit it in the bank. Potter finds the misplaced money and hides it from Billy.
When the bank examiner discovers the shortage later that night, George realizes that he will be held responsible and sent to jail and the company will collapse, finally allowing Potter to take over the town. Thinking of his wife, their young children, and others he loves will be better off with him dead, he contemplates suicide.
But the prayers of his loved ones result in a gentle angel named Clarence coming to earth to help George, with the promise of earning his wings. He shows George what things would have been like if he had never been born.

Rochelle to host virtual forum on domestic violence

State Rep. Kara Rochelle, D-Ansonia, Derby, will host a virtual forum on domestic violence at 3 p.m. Nov. 30.

The webinar will be held via Zoom, the web-based video conferencing platform.

Rochelle will be joined by Lt. Patrick Lynch, Patrol Division Commander & Public Information Officer of the Ansonia Police Department; Meghan Scanlon, President & CEO of the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence; Cindy Carlson, Program Manager at the Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence, BHCare; and Geralyn O'Neil-Wild, TEAM, Inc. Board of Directors Board Officer.

Participants will learn more about the warning signs of domestic violence, the power and control dynamics involved, and community resources available to those experiencing domestic violence.

This will include legal rights, transition services, and counseling options, among other topics. Panelists will also provide an overview of the new 2021 law that expanded Connecticut's definition of domestic violence to include coercive control, among other things.

Participants will be able to register for the webinar at https://bit.ly/3nIPsHQ.

"Domestic violence can affect anyone regardless of their background, and the warning signs aren't always obvious. The pattern of behavior may start subtly and become more aggressive over time. This forum is designed to help those experiencing or possibly witnessing domestic violence to recognize the warning signs and know where they can access assistance in our community. Our goal is to also empower people who may be experiencing domestic violence and friends who may wish to learn how they can connect a loved one who is experiencing domestic violence to support," said Rochelle.

The forum comes two weeks after an Ansonia mother of three was allegedly killed by her husband during a domestic dispute. This is the third woman in two years from Ansonia or Derby to be killed by a current or former intimate partner. According to the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, this is also marks the ninth known intimate partner homicide in Connecticut this year.

Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive behavior where one partner attempts to control and dominate the other through verbal, psychological, physical, sexual, financial, or technological abuse.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, domestic violence has become more prevalent as residents experience isolation and grapple with unemployment and diminished access to necessities.

During the 2020 fiscal year from November 2019 to June 2020, the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence reported in June 2020, shelter capacity was at 151 percent, spending $78,803 on hotels to temporarily house victim-survivors. In that same month, outgoing calls to ensure existing clients could access services necessary to be safe increased 97 percent from June 2019.

Attendees will be able to ask the panelists questions before and during the event using the Zoom chat function.

Individuals who have questions they would like to ask the panel privately and confidentially can email them to Rochelle  at Kara.Rochelle@cga.ct.gov.

This is a press release from Rochelle's office.
