'Turnback Tuesday' highlights Derby Beverage Co.

'Turnback Tuesday' salutes the Derby Beverage Co.
Ralph Marsel started the business in his home at 207 Caroline St., Derby in 1932. It continued there until he opened Check Package Store at 149 Main St., Derby in 1936.
In 1947, Ralph updated the name to Check Liquor Store. He owned and operated the business until 1959 when a new owner took over.
Ralph and his wife Gussie continued to live in their Caroline Street home. The coaster pictured here was a recent donation to the Library by Roosevelt Tower Antiques & Salvage.

Thanks as always to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week.

Beacon Falls Public Library to host presentation on suffragettes

BEACON FALLS - The Beacon Falls Public Library will host "Suffragettes in Corselettes," a talk about the suffrage movement and the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
The 19th amendment that guaranteed women the right to vote will mark its 100th anniversary this year. It was ratified in August,1920.

The Library is at 1 Maple Ave.

"For centuries, women have allowed themselves to be squeezed, twisted, and squished to conform to desired shapes.

"The history of underwear reveals a lot about women’s changing roles in society – how we perceive ourselves, and how we’re viewed by others. The 1910s saw an end to the hourglass figure with a tiny waist. Women were finally able to breathe and move more freely. Did the demise of tight-lacing help women gain the right to vote in 1920? Underwear matters.

This presentation is hands-on and participatory. Tight corseting exerted 22 pounds of pressure on internal organs – find out what that actually feels like!
Experience the difficulty of completing everyday tasks while wearing a corset. Have you ever relay raced in a hobble skirt?!
Herstory Unsanitized presentations explore the engrossing “taboo” subjects omitted from history.
When a zany teacher and grounded green witch join forces, they create Grounded Goodwife. Velya Jancz-Urban’s gregarious personality and Ehris Urban’s serene energy enable this mother/daughter duo to connect with audiences. Their delivery is funny and frank. Laugh, grimace, and honor our foremothers’ journeys."

Recuperation journey: Snow and sunset

This photo popped up in my Facebook memories from Feb. 4, 2015.
Local friends: Look at all the snow we had on the ground!

Feb. 4, 2020 - No snow and it's not worth taking a comparison shot. It's not pretty out there today.
