"We can only stay safe if everyone does their part. While CT has seen some improvement, it does not mean the virus cannot re-emerge quickly. 

"Please be safe, practice social distancing, and wear a mask when you cannot properly socially distance.

Seymour Public Library to host virtual theater workshop for children

SEYMOUR - Seymour Public Library will host an Acting Clinic with Ingrid Schaeffer via Zoom from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Aug 6.

Join Schaeffer in this virtual theater workshop as children act out the story of Fraidyzoo by Thyra Heder. 

Play improvisation games and hear the story before children get dressed up to act it out.

All you need to participate is an active imagination! This event is perfect for children ages 6-12.

TEAM, lawmakers, Friendly Hands Food Bank partner to distribute food in Seymour

SEYMOUR - Free fresh food boxes will be available to Greater Valley households Monday, Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Seymour Community Center, 20 Pine St. 
Residents may drive up and get a box of fresh produce.

TEAM, Inc. is partnering with state Representatives Themis Klarides, Nicole Klarides-Ditria, First Selectman Kurt Miller, the region's mayors, first selectmen and lawmakers, and Friendly Hands Food Bank of Torrington to benefit people who need help during this difficult time. 

“This program has been so well received at a time when we all find ourselves in a healthcare crisis and many are out of work," state lawmakers said in a prepared statement.

"The Farmers to Family initiative is making a huge difference for thousands of families in Connecticut." They will distribute 800 boxes of fresh foods.

'Turnback Tuesday' features wax tapers once used at Derby Public Library

Turnback Tuesday is shining some light on the Columbia Wax Works of N.Y. 
The box pictured of Never Drip Wax Tapers was a common household item at the end of the 19th and early 20th century. 
The Columbia Wax Works boasted selling millions of boxes annually. 
The long nature of this product made it safe and easy to light any number of things. 
One can just imagine head librarians Grace A. Child, Minnie B. Cotter and Emma E. Lessey here at the Derby Public Library making their rounds of lighting the lamps so patrons could read and explore the wonder of books.

Thanks as always to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week! 

Klarides-Ditria: DMV announces additional deadline extensions

The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles recently announced that it has added to its list of extended deadlines for residents with expiring credentials. Eligible DMV credentials that expire between August 1, 2020 and September 30, 2020 are automatically covered by this extension. In addition to extending the expiration date of DMV credentials, late fees associated with eligible expired credentials will be waived during this time period of the extension for qualifying credentials. Deadlines have been extended for the following DMV-related items: ·       All licenses, permits, and identification cards: Lengthens the credential extension to 90 days for credentials that expire between August 1, 2020 and September 30, 2020. ·       All registrations, including International Registration Plan and boat registrations: For credentials expiring between August 1, 2020 and September 30, 2020, credentials will be extended by 90 days from the expiration date. ·       Emissions testing and retesting: For test due dates that fall between August 1, 2020 and September 30, 2020, the due date will be extended by 90 days from the emissions expiration date. ·       Permanent disability placard: Any permanent disability placard that expires at the same time as a credential that is subject to an extension will be extended by 90 days. ·       Business licenses: For credentials expiring between August 1, 2020 and September 30, 2020, credentials will be extended by 90 days from the expiration date. ·       Temporary registrations: Temporary registrations obtained between August 1, 2020 and September 30, 2020 are extended by 90 days. ·       Temporary licenses, IDs, permits that contain a digital image: Expiration dates will be extended by 90 days for all temporary (paper) licenses obtained between August 1, 2020 and September 30, 2020. ·       Flashing light permits: Expiration dates between August 1, 2020 and September 30, 2020 are extended by 90 days. ·       School bus proficiency tests: Extends the validity of school bus proficiency tests that are due between August 1, 2020 and September 30, 2020 by 90 days. "Attached please find the latest [Monday] update on behalf of the Naugatuck Valley Health District.

"NVHD has identified duplicate cases/cases with multiple profiles in the CT Electronic Disease Surveillance System as well as a number of individuals who had their addresses updated out of the NVHD jurisdiction. 
"Today’s data report reflects those changes as well as four new reported cases, including one COVID-19 associated death from last week. 
Our sincerest condolences are extended to the family during this time.
