Recuperation journey: Late afternoon moon

The moon today (Wednesday) is in waxing gibbous phase, 69 percent illumination.
When I took this photo it was 4:50 p.m. and still light out. I don't understand why the sky is black in the photo. Too technical for me!

'Turnback Tuesday' features historic use of shutters on old buildings

Turnback Tuesday highlights the use of exterior shutters.
Shutters were used for a number of things. Through the middle 19th century, most homes would have solid raised panel shutters on the first floor for privacy and security. Sometimes the first floor had white shutters so when candles were lit at night it would appear brighter.
The second floor would have louvered shutters to allow the breeze to enter during the warm months like the ones shown here on the Y.M.C.A. building in Derby. Dark-colored louvered shutters on the second floor would provide darkness while sleeping.

Thanks to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week.

'Twelve Dogs of Christmas' topic of discussion at Derby Public Library

DERBY - All are invited to Derby Public Library's monthly Lunchtime Book Discussion at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 4.
The featured book will be “The Twelve Dogs of Christmas” by David Rosenfelt, who is known for his legal thrillers filled with wry humor.
“The Twelve Dogs of Christmas” is heartwarming and ingeniously plotted.
Defense lawyer Andy Carpenter, a wisecracking, dog-loving attorney usually tries to avoid taking on new cases at all costs. But Carpenter loves dogs, so he’s eager to help a woman who’s known as “Pups” because she takes care of abandoned puppies. Pups’ problem?
A newcomer to her neighborhood has complained to the local zoning board that she has more dogs than are allowed per household.

Carpenter delivers his characteristically hilarious courtroom performance.

Multiple copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk. The Library is at 313 Elizabeth St.
Drop-ins are welcome; no registration required. For information call 203-736-1482.
