Volunteers needed for book sale at Plumb Memorial Library in Shelton

SHELTON - The Friends of the Shelton Libraries Spring Book Sale at Plumb Memorial Library, 65 Wooster St., will be held May 16-20. 

Able-bodied volunteers are needed to help set up - 
those who can lift boxes of books onto dollies or carts, wheel them to the sales room, and unload them. 
People who can unpack the books from the boxes and arrange them on tables or shelves are also needed. 

Setup will start at 2 p.m. May 14 and go until the library closes at 8:30 p.m.
On May 15 set up continues starting at 10 a.m. Volunteers are also needed to work the sale May 16-May 20, and to help break down the sales room at the end of the sale May 19 around 7:30 p.m.

If you can help, even for a couple of hours, please send an e-mail to sheltonbooksale@gmail.com with your name, phone number and what day(s) and time you can help. 
High school students can work towards their required community service hours when they help - just let us know when you e-mail that you need community service hours.

Learn about birds April 27 at Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby


DERBY - The Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Ave., will host free programs on National Go Birding Day, April 27. 

The programs will encourage experienced and novice birders to engage in bird activities with center staff. 

Meet Donna Rose Smith in the parking lot to begin the day for a bird walk from 8-10 a.m. and end in the Center for coffee and refreshments.  
At 10 a.m. there will be a Bird Atlas Update. Learn about the statewide effort to inventory birds in Connecticut. 
Stephen Broker, Region 8 Southwest-Central Atlas Blocks Coordinator (Greater New Haven) and currently president of the Connecticut Ornithological Association, will present updates on the project and information on how the survey is being conducted and ways you can become involved. 
All day participants can take a bird quiz and join in activities on the grounds and in the building.

The Kellogg Environmental Center, a facility of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, is open 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

St. Vincent De Paul in Derby distributes donated food, Easter baskets


DERBY - St. Vincent De Paul staff and volunteers Wednesday gave out food and gaily-wrapped Easter baskets to local families.
One couple donated 62 baskets for children and adults that were filled with candy, snacks, stuffed animals and other toys, SVDP thrift shop manager Cindy Barbian said.

Derby Public Library to hold YA Wednesdays in May

DERBY - Derby Public Library invites all young adults ages 12 to 17 to join the fun of YA Wednesdays in May. 


The activity runs from 6-7:30 p.m.
Sony Play Station Four (PS4), Nintendo Wii, board games, and Legos will be available. 
Light refreshments will be provided.
