My Sister's Place in Ansonia to close for remodeling

ANSONIA - Thanks to a generous grant from the Katharine Matthies Foundation, My Sister’s Place is getting a facelift.

The store and donation center at 380 Main St. will be closed from Jan. 20-27 and reopen Jan. 28.

Workers will replace the flooring, touch up paint, make repairs, and perform other housekeeping maintenance. 

A grand reopening celebration is anticipated for Feb. 1.

MSP, a program of BHcare, offers quality new and gently used clothing, furniture and house wares at discount prices. 

All proceeds from MSP support BHcare’s The Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence Services.  

Each year UCDVS helps more than 6,000 adults and children who are experiencing domestic violence; all services are provided free of charge.

Conflict cancels Master's Table community dinner in Ansonia

Sharing a note from James Fedak, Jr., President, Master's Table Community Meals:

"Due to a conflict with the church hall we had to cancel our dinner for Sunday, January 27th. I will send out info. about next meal in the coming weeks.

'Turnback Tuesday' features Lakeview Service Station in Derby

Turnback Tuesday remembers Lakeview Service Station on Roosevelt Drive in Derby. 
Established in 1932 by Anita E. Haaf, she owned the station until 1952 when Edwin B Haaf took over until 1959. Through the years, the station took on some transformations. 
From 1948-51, there was a Lakeview Milk Bar & Luncheonette within the location. 
In 1951, the station was called by two names “Lakeview Oil Service” and “Lakeview Service Garage.”

DERBY - Derby Neck Library offers a variety of educational and fun programs in February.

Dinner and a Movie
The Library hosts Dinner and a Movie for those 18 years and older at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 7.

This month’s feature film is "The Girl in the Spider’s Web” on blu-ray, in high definition. 

Free movie refreshments will be served, including a pizza dinner at intermission.

Women's Forum 

On Feb. 18 at 12:30 p.m. the Library hosts Women’s Forum, a literary discussion group that meets each month on the third Monday. This month the focus is on two short stories about strange happenings.Copies of the tales are available at the library. Attendees may wish to bring a light lunch; coffee and tea will be served.

Tuesday Tea-V
The Library hosts Tuesday Afternoon Tea-V each Tuesday at 1 p.m., showing Agatha Christie’s detective Hercule Poirot in mystery adventures of one hour’s duration, followed by a brief discussion period.
Free coffee, tea, and snacks are served.

Local history program
On Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m. the Library presents Patricia Sweeney, Ph.D. with a powerpoint on the Valley in the Great Depression, including fashions, entertainment, local WPA projects, welfare activities, and more.

Evening Book Club
The Library hosts the Evening Book Club at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 25 with a discussion of “The Annotated Alice” by Lewis Carroll, moderated by Patricia Sweeney, Ph.D.
Copies of the book are available at the library. Come enjoy an informative and entertaining hour.
