5K in Shelton to benefit BHcare's Alliance for Prevention and Wellness

SHELTON - Fight Against Drugs Everywhere (FADE) will hold its fourth annual drug awareness 5K run/walk at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Shelton Pavilion & Riverwalk.
Proceeds will benefit BHcare’s Alliance for Prevention and Wellness.

This year’s event will include a professionally-timed sunset 5K run/walk, live music, resource fair, and will conclude with a candlelight remembrance ceremony.
Names will be read of loved ones lost to overdose. People can submit names at the event to be read aloud.

Drug overdose rates have skyrocketed in the United States over the last 15 years.
Drug overdoses and drug overdose deaths continue to rise at an alarming rate.
More than 120 people die every day in the U.S. from an opioid overdose. Both prescription painkillers and heroin are contributing to this phenomenon. Last year, 1,038 Connecticut  residents lost their lives to drug overdoses.

FADE 5K run/walk is being held to raise awareness of the opioid epidemic and overdoses, acknowledge and support the grief felt by families and friends who have lost a loved one, provide hope to families who have a loved one struggling with a substance use disorder, and to provide local prevention and treatment resources.

Participants who register by Aug.15 can run/walk in memory of a loved one.
Register today at https://bit.ly/FADE2018.

'Turnback Tuesday' features pledges for Soldier's Monument in Derby

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features a subscription book for the building of “a suitable monument in memory of the soldiers of Derby who lost their lives in this late war."

The book is dated Aug. 1, 1876 and lists names and pledge amounts for the Soldier's Monument construction on the Derby Green.
The monument recently received a full restoration and was rededicated July 10, 2018.
Former Valley Community Foundation President/CEO and Derby native Jamie Cohen conceived the idea and led the fundraising effort to restore the monument. The restoration fund still exists within the VCF.
