Derby Public Library announces annual scholarship essay contest

DERBY - The Derby Public Library Annual $500 Scholarship Prize is open to all high school seniors living in Derby who plan to further their education, regardless of where they go to school. 


The Library Board of Directors will choose the winner based on an essay explaining the role of libraries in their life. 

The award will be presented June 20 at the Library Board of Directors' meeting. 
In addition to the monetary prize, the winner’s name will be added to the Scholarship Prize Plaque located in the Young Adult Department. 
High school seniors may submit their entry directly to the Library Director now through May 24.

Griffin Hospital in Derby to host program on meditation

DERBY - Griffin Hospital is helping individuals refresh their spirits for spring with a free program on meditation from 6-7 p.m. April 26.
Janice Lautier, director of Spiritual Care and Education, will host “Finding Balance,” an interactive program about the benefits and styles of meditation that can help participants balance and settle themselves - especially during chaotic times. 
There will be group discussion and experiential learning as well as guidance on how to start a daily meditation practice.

This talk is part of Griffin Hospital's Healthy U Talks, a series of free wellness talks featuring Griffin Hospital medical experts and community partners providing trusted health information and answers to questions on a wide range of topics.

Derby Neck Library to host motivational speaker


DERBY- Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., will host a motivational seminar with Marjan Sattarpour at 2 p.m. Saturday.

No registration is required. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Sattarpour was self-motivated to lose weight and improve her health starting in 2013.

By 2014 she competed in a NPC bodybuilding competition against hundreds of athletic competitors and placed fourth.
