Low carb eating topic of support group talks at Griffin Hospital in Derby

DERBY -The Diabetes Education & Support Group at Griffin Hospital will host two free presentations about low carb eating for individuals diagnosed with diabetes at 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The hospital is at 130 Division St.

Certified Diabetes Educator Mary Swansiger, BSN, MPH, will present “Carbohydrate Counting: Putting Skills into Practice.”

Carb counting is a great tool for diabetes self-management, while still allowing people with to eat a variety of foods. 
The open discussion will cover measuring portions to correctly measure total carbohydrates, how to count fiber, understanding nutrition labels, what to do when dining out, and eating combination foods. 

Record keeping and pattern management will also be discussed.

The presentations will be in the hospital’s Childbirth Education Classroom A. There will be free valet parking for the 2:30 p.m. session.

The Diabetes Education & Support Group meets September - June on the second Tuesday of each month to discuss the management of diabetes, its challenges, and day-to-day dietary concerns. 
Individuals with diabetes and their caregivers are welcome to attend.

Bowl-2-Benefit BHcare's The Umbrella Center on tap Saturday in Milford

MILFORD - More than 1,000 bowlers are scheduled to participate Saturday in BHcare’s Bowl-2-Benefit at Bowlero, 1717 Boston Post Road.   
It is one of the area's largest and most popular fundraising events. 

Bowlers help raise money for BHcare’s The Umbrella Center for Domestic violence Services by forming bowling teams and collecting donations in support of their participation.  

A great number of individuals, companies, and organizations support the event through sponsorships and cash donations.

There will be five bowling sessions: 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 7 p.m. A special VIP reception will be held at 1:30 p.m.

State senator urges constituents to write in favor of legislation

George Logan, R-Ansonia, said in an email today:

A bill to prohibit Connecticut public schools from compiling a so-called "Asian Registry" received strong support during a March 8 public hearing at the Legislative Office Building.
Hundreds of taxpayers joined my fellow legislators and me to speak in favor of Bill 359.

Our message:

Connecticut government should not mandate that Asian-Pacific American students register their ancestral nation of origin or ethnic background.
Such a mandate would be an invasion of privacy. 
I thank Lin Yang of Woodbridge for organizing the terrific turnout.
I urge you to join us in speaking out.

St. Patrick's Day dinner in Derby to benefit St. Michael Church projects

DERBY - A Corned Beef and Cabbage supper to benefit St. Michael Parish Capital Projects will be held on St. Patrick's Day.

Join Marc Garofalo and St. Michael's Kitchen Krew at 5:30 p.m. March 17 at St. Michael Church Hall, 75 Derby Ave.
Tickets are $15 per person.

 

The menu includes family-style corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, soda, coffee, and dessert.

For reservations or information, call 203-734-0005. Seating is limited for the comfort of supporters.

Anyone interested in donating a prize for the raffle or baking for the dessert trays can either drop off at the rectory or bring it by 2 p.m. on the day of the dinner.
