DERBY - The Derby Public Library invites all young adults ages 12 to 17 to Teen Maker Space, Build a Better World at 3 p.m. March 29.

Available resources include 3D design programs, 3D printer, 3D doodle pens, Legos, and more! 

Light refreshments will be provided.

Ansonia students to leap into icy water to benefit Literacy Volunteers

ANSONIA - Ansonia High School's National Honor Society will be joining the many other brave, warm-hearted souls who will “take the leap” March 17 for Literacy Volunteers of Southern Connecticut.

“Leapers” from around the area will collect donations from family members, co-workers and friends, and run, jump, or dive into the icy cold waters at Walnut Beach in Milford.

Please support the NHS members who are willing to run into frigid waters to support the literacy efforts in our community.

Community Band to perform 'Story Book' music at Seymour Middle School

SEYMOUR - Naugatuck Community Band presents “Story Book” music inspired by literature at 7 p.m. Saturday at Seymour Middle School.

The school is at 211 Mountain Road.

This free concert is sponsored by the Seymour Culture and Arts Commission. Although the concert is free donations will be accepted for the Food Bank.

Recuperation journey: World Kidney Day

I admit I lost track of time. 
This morning I read that today, the second Thursday in March, is World Kidney Day. 
The day is marked to raise awareness of the importance of our kidneys.
March is National Kidney Month.

PKD, Polycystic Kidney Disease, is a horrible, inherited disorder for which there's no cure. Fluid-filled cysts develop in the kidneys and reduce their function, leading eventually to renal failure. It is one of many chronic kidney diseases.

Many members of my late father's side of the family suffered with it, and I also inherited it. 
But I was fortunate enough to receive a kidney from an altruistic donor last May, which explains my "recuperation journey" posts. And my never-ending gratitude to my donor.

DERBY - Griffin Hospital will host a free presentation about positive thinking and how it can help individuals cope with life stressors and symptoms of depression at 6:30 p.m. March 21.

Deborah Ranilla, LCSW, and Emily Medina, LCSW of Griffin Hospital’s Outpatient Psychiatry Department will host “Positive Psychology,” a free discussion on how gratitude, kindness, optimism, self-compassion, forgiveness, and other similar topics can improve well-being and help people live happier and more fulfilling lives.

This talk is part of Griffin Hospital's Healthy U Talks, a series of free wellness talks featuring Griffin Hospital medical experts and community partners providing trusted health information and answers to questions on a wide range of topics.
