Hike offered for families at Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby

DERBY - Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection invites young naturalists to join Miss Tina, an early childhood specialist volunteer with the Kellogg Environmental Center, on an excursion to find and learn about seeds.

The program will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. Aug. 27.

Families and friends will explore the area around the estate and Osbornedale State Park looking for the many types of seeds produced by plants, while learning how a seed works and its special features that help it survive.

Afterwards, join in making a seed mosaic using a great collection of seeds to help young naturalists learn different textures and forms.
The morning fun is designed for children age 4 to 7 with an adult.
Older siblings are always welcome as well as adults with a sense of wonder or a wish to develop their own observation skills.

Engagement in outdoor explorations and questioning is a vital stage in child development.
This program is designed to help the young child learn about the world around them.
The morning program will begin at the Kellogg Environmental Center building to see and touch natural objects related to things found on our trails and in the park.  Preschool educator Miss Tina shares her years of educational experience to help children develop observation skills, questioning abilities and enjoyment of the outdoors.

The program, which includes a healthy snack, is free and open to all.  We ask parents to provide water or beverages for the outdoor activities.
Registration is required.

Kellogg Environmental Center is located at 500 Hawthorne Ave. and is open 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
For further information, directions, or to register please call 203-734-2513 or email donna.kingston@ct.gov.
