BMX riders' skills thrill students in Seymour

Members of Dialed Action Sports Team from Lincoln Park, N.J. wowed students Friday at Chatfield-LoPresti School in Seymour with their breath-taking stunts.

Retired police chief to discuss book at Derby Public Library


DERBY - Retired Derby Police Chief turned author Andrew L. Cota, Jr. will hold a book signing at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Derby Public Library, 313 Elizabeth St.

Cota will discuss "Whitestone," a novel.

The public is invited to attend.

Cota's other book is "Through the Lens of an Old Man." He also drew the cover art for both books. 

Cota's love of art also includes wood carving, with his most notable work being the carving on the Sterling Opera House on Elizabeth Street.

Griffin Hospital in Derby donates gift cards to benefit Valley United Way


DERBY - Griffin Hospital is looking to focus on the “fun” in fundraising with a unique raffle to support local nonprofits.
Griffin has donated $1,000 worth of gift cards to the SportsCenter of Connecticut in Shelton for a special online raffle to benefit the Valley United Way.

The gift cards can be used for the SportsCenter’s array of entertainments, including a weather-protected golf driving range, 18-hole mini-golf course, lazer tag arena, interactive bowling alleys, video arcade, baseball/softball batting cages, target paintball, and skating arena.

Raffle tickets are $5 each (10 ticket purchase maximum). On June 3, four winners will be drawn with first prize receiving a $400 gift card; second place a $300 gift card; third place a $200 gift card; and fourth place will get a $100 gift card.

Tickets may be purchased online at griffinhealth.org/unitedwayraffle.
All raffle proceeds will benefit the Valley United Way.

Resume workshops offered at Derby Public Library


DERBY - The Derby Public Library, 313 Elizabeth St., offers Resume Workshops on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

During these sessions, participants are welcome to either
start from scratch or bring copies of their existing resumes, cover letters as well, for review and optimizing.  

Often times a new resume can be created simply by making a number of subtle tweaks versus a whole new change.
The next class will be held at 6:30 p.m. June 1.  

Registration is not required.

Seymour Public Library plans activities for children in June


SEYMOUR - Seymour Public Library, 46 Church St., has scheduled a variety of programs for children in June.

June 1 and 8 - 10:30 a.m.– Lapsit with Baby for six-month to 2-year olds. Read and Play with your little one.

June 2 and 9 – 10:30 a.m.– Story hour for 2-5 year olds.  Stories, songs, finger plays, and a craft.

June 2 - 4 p.m. – StoryKids’ Book Club for K-Gr 2.  Book talks, craft and a snack. Child must have some reading ability.

June 3 – 3:45 p.m. – YA Origami – create a wonderful origami craft- ages 8 and up. Limited space!

June 7 – 10:30 a.m. – Science Snoopers - ‘Tale of Tails’ - All kinds of feet! Natural science and a craft for ages 2 and up - must be able to sit and listen.

June 8 - 4 p.m. – Nutmeggers’ - YA Book Club for Grade 5 and up. Book talks, craft, and a snack - features the Intermediate Nutmeg Nominees.

June 9 - 4 p.m. – BookChatters’ Book Club for Grades 2-4. Book talks, craft, and a snack. Club features the Magic Tree House Series 

June 17 and 18 – All-day craft table for Drop-In Father’s Day Craft.

June 21 and on ... Summer Reading Club Sign-ups begin: ‘On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!’ Join in for all the fun!
