Griffin Hospital in Derby to host fall prevention program

DERBY - Griffin Hospital, The Valley Parish Nurse Program, and The Agency on Aging of South Central CT will host a free Fall Prevention Program from 9 a.m.-noon March 27 at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St.

The program will discuss the dangers of falling, especially for seniors, and will help attendees prevent falls by: assessing their fall risk; teaching and practicing exercises to improve balance and leg strength; providing a medication review; encouraging annual eye exams; and teaching ways to reduce tripping hazards at home.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of three adults 65 and older will fall each year.
For those 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of injury, death, and hospital admissions for trauma.

Those who fall - even if not injured - develop a fear of falling. This fear causes people to limit their activities, reducing their mobility, causing loss of physical fitness, which in turn increases the actual risk of falling.

A light breakfast will be provided by Griffin Hospital Lifeline.

DERBY - Kudos to former Mayor Anthony Staffieri for being recognized Sunday by the congregation at Real Tabernacle Church in Plaza on the Green for his efforts to improve the city.

Staffieri served four terms as mayor.

Lenten Fish Fry slated on Fridays at St. Joseph Church in Shelton

SHELTON - Last Friday, many braved the frigid temperatures to attend the first Friday of our Annual Lenten Fish Fry at St. Joseph Church.

Every Friday until March 27, all are invited to come and enjoy the delectable fresh fish between 5-8 p.m. Guests are welcome to bring their own drinks, although soda, water, juice and coffee is available to purchase.

There are many new items on the menu, and many old favorites have returned. All of the food is available to dine in or take out. One of the healthy new items, baked fish, was a favorite last week.

Thank you to Chairperson Darrin Besescheck for his hard work and special thanks to all of the parents, teachers, staff, students, and parishioners who are helping to create this weekly gathering. It’s a great time for delicious food, and good company!

Derby Library plans workshop on Social Security

DERBY - The Derby Public Library will host a workshop, Maximize Your Social Security 

Benefits, at 6:30 p.m. March 30.

David Cowan, endorsed AAA retiree advisor, will discuss how to navigate retirement savings challenges, ways to safeguard retirement savings, and how to increase Social Security benefits.

While the program is targeted for pre-retirees, ages 60-66, the general public is welcome to attend.
